The State of Sun Safety Education in Ohio High Schools: A Surveyed Analysis
Abstract
Introduction: Skin cancer rates are rising nationwide, with youth UV exposure linked to later risk. Despite proven benefits of sun safety education, current programs in Ohio high schools remain unassessed.
Methods: A cross-sectional survey was distributed to eligible Ohio high school and district administrators, identified through the Ohio School Board’s directory, with contact information collected from official school websites. Administrators received multiple email or phone outreach attempts, including a final reminder containing an anonymous 8-question Qualtrics survey assessing current sun safety education practices, attitudes, and needs.
Results: A total of 153 survey responses were collected, with 132 complete responses included in the final analysis. Respondents represented 44 counties, offering wide geographical coverage. Nearly half (48.5%) of administrators reported their schools do not include sun safety education, and 32.6% were unsure. Only 18.5% confirmed it was implemented, mainly through health and science classes. While most administrators (78.0%) supported sun safety’s inclusion in the curriculum, fewer (47.0%) supported a nationwide mandate. Qualitative responses reflected support for additional resources, alongside concerns about time, cost, and curriculum space. Overall, results highlight significant gaps and mixed attitudes regarding sun safety education in Ohio high schools.
Conclusion: Despite recognizing its importance, most Ohio schools do not include sun safety in their curriculum, revealing a significant gap and underscoring the need for further research and advocacy.
